About Dr Coulthard
James Coulthard is an orthopaedic surgeon servicing Newcastle and the greater Hunter area. He trained in the Hunter New England Health network and obtained his fellowship from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2018.
In 2019 James gained further experience in Oxford, UK as the senior clinical fellow in paediatric orthopaedics at the Oxford University Hospitals. After returning to Australia, he completed a fellowship in adult knee surgery with Dr Peter McEwen at the Mater Hospital Queensland. He then moved to Perth for twelve months’ further experience in paediatrics at the Perth Children’s Hospital, focusing on disorders of the hip and knee in all age groups.
James is one of the on-call orthopaedic surgeons at The New Maitland Hospital and performs surgery for all incoming orthopaedic emergency presentations.
He sees both public and private patients at his consulting suites in Merewether and East Maitland.

James is an orthopaedic surgeon with further training in the management of complex problems in children and adults.
Adult Orthopaedics
James has focused on the care of the knee in adults and is experienced in joint replacement, ligament and meniscal surgery.
He performs partial and total knee replacement with modern techniques, including the use of robotic-assisted surgery.
Paediatric Orthopaedics
James has trained in general paediatric orthopaedics, and has additional extensive experience in disorders of the knee and hip from birth to adulthood.
